Teeth whitening: The different ways and harmfulness

Many people like white teeth, but do not have them because they drink a lot of tea and coffee or because they smoke, or it is also possible that they simply do not have white teeth of their own. If you are not happy with the color of your teeth, you can have them whitened at the dentist, which is usually very expensive. You can also bleach them yourself, naturally, using home, garden and kitchen remedies, such as sodium bicarbonate, burnt bread, orange peel and salt! You can also buy and order whitening kits, white strips, and whitening toothpastes yourself.

Natural whitening at home

You can whiten your teeth naturally by using home, garden and kitchen remedies. They appear to have fewer harmful effects than whitening kits. They are a lot less effective and it has not been proven that they work.

Orange peel

Every day, rub the white side of an orange peel against your teeth and let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes, then rinse and brush your teeth. After a week, try to do it less often, 2 to 3 times a week.

Burnt bread

It sounds strange, but in Iran women do this a lot. They burn bread on purpose and brush their teeth with it. Please note that the taste is not nice.

Turmeric

Turmeric or turmeric powder is a bright yellow powder, not very tasty but suitable for white teeth. Brush your teeth with the powder for five minutes and repeat this a few times a week, you will see that your teeth become whiter.

Sodium bicarbonate

Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate is mainly used in Germany and England for baking. In the Netherlands it is slightly less popular. If you mix sodium bicarbonate with lemon juice and brush your teeth with it every day for a month, your teeth will whiten significantly. You can also mix sodium bicarbonate with toothpaste and put it in a mouthpiece made of silver foil and let it sit for 30 minutes. You can just get sodium bicarbonate at the supermarket, just make sure you get baking soda. Please note that this method can be harmful to your teeth.

Salty

Salt helps disinfect the mouth and removes plaque. Add a desired amount of salt to a drink of lukewarm water and rinse your mouth for a few minutes.

Vinegar

Vinegar is very acidic, so it will remove all your plaque at once. Rinse your mouth with vinegar once every 2 to 3 months. Don’t do it more often because it can be harmful to your tooth enamel. Rinse for 15-30 seconds.

Charcoal

Mix charcoal powder with your toothpaste and gently brush your teeth twice a day for a week. It has not been proven that this method works, opinions are divided.

Oil pulling

Oil pulling is a simple, safe and inexpensive way to whiten your teeth. There appear to be no harmful effects and health also appears to benefit from it. Place a tablespoon of oil, preferably coconut oil, in your mouth. Rinse 1-2 times a day for 10-20 minutes, preferably when you get up because then there are a lot of bacteria in the mouth. After a few weeks you will see results.

Whitening at home with a whitening kit

Whitening your teeth at home with a whitening kit is not expensive, if you order from cheap sites you will spend less than 10 euros for whitening your teeth. Whitening is done by squirting a gel into a mouthguard and putting it in your mouth. The question is whether whitening your teeth is harmful with a whitening kit that was ordered on a Chinese site and has not been checked for safety.

The fact is that dentists are allowed to whiten with 6% hydrogen peroxide, while for beauticians this is 0.1%. Self-whitening kits sometimes contain up to 44% hydrogen peroxide. At such a percentage, the teeth can be broken off from the outside at the root. Usually the whitening kits on Chinese sites such as Aliexpress and Wish have not been checked for the effects they can have. Yet people are often tempted to buy the products because they have not yet heard any complaints about the whitening kits. This is usually because the whitening kits are fairly new on the market and no one has yet experienced the long-term effects. Another reason to buy the whitening kits on Chinese sites is because they are much cheaper than on sites where the product has been checked. Since the whitening kits do their job very well, people still buy them, don’t fall for that! You don’t know what your teeth will look like in 30 years.

Whitening toothpaste

There are other ways to whiten your teeth at home, such as whitening toothpaste, but this usually does not work because the amount of hydrogen peroxide may only be 0.1%. The makers put special products in their toothpaste to make it seem like it works. For example, there are toothpastes with charcoal or toothpaste with certain scrubbing particles for your teeth so that they scrub off bacteria and give you white teeth. Finally, there are also makers who make their toothpaste blue, because blue and yellow are complementary to each other on the color wheel. This means that if you have yellow teeth, the blue toothpaste should whiten them. The maker of the toothpaste makes you pay a lot of money for the toothpaste, but unfortunately you don’t get the radiant white smile you want in return.

White strips

Another way to whiten your teeth are white strips, which are sold considerably less on Chinese sites such as Aliexpress and Wish and there are fewer types. This product has also become less popular in recent years. The most popular is the 3D Crest White Strips. This seems to work well, is reasonably reliable, but does hurt the teeth. The 3D Crest White Strips are not expensive if you compare it to treatment at the dentist.

Even more ways?

There are several ways to whiten your teeth, such as a whitening pen or, for example, with a kind of nail polish jar with a gel in it that you have to apply to your teeth. Sometimes these products don’t work, sometimes they do.

Teeth whitening at the dentist

Teeth whitening at the dentist is the least harmful, the products they use contain no more than 6% hydrogen peroxide. It is not known exactly what is in the gel they use. The UV lamp that the dentists use also helps to whiten the teeth. It is the safest and longest-lasting method of bleaching, but also the most expensive. Teeth whitening at a dentist costs between 200 and 300 euros.

Conclusion

If you have a large budget, it is best to have your teeth whitened at the dentist, as this has a long-lasting effect. If you have a smaller budget, it is best to whiten your teeth yourself with home, garden and kitchen remedies, which appear to have less harmful effects than using a whitening kit. If you find this to have little effect, you can do it yourself with a product that has been proven to be safe and contains little to no hydrogen peroxide.
